SMOKERS in north Oxfordshire could find their habit costing even more as Cherwell District Council prepares to get tough on people throwing away cigarette butts.
Since the smoking ban came into effect an increasing number of ‘dog ends’ are being thrown away in the streets, or outside shops and offices where smokers are now forced to congregate.
Although many pubs and night clubs have installed bins for smokers, the council litter enforcement team has reported a steady increase in cigarette litter.
The council has warned people who drop cigarette butts could face the same punishment — a hefty fine of £75 or criminal record.
As part of the campaign more council staff will be given the power to issue on-the- spot fines.
George Reynolds, the council’s executive member for health community and the environment, said: “Putting extra resources into catching litter louts has proved very effective.
“We’ve issued 82 fixed penalty notices and taken out five successful prosecutions.”
