ANGLO-French relations have been notoriously frosty over the years – and now things are about to take a turn for the worse.
Wallingford is trying to end a link with its French twin town of Luxeuil-les-Bains in what can only be described as a classic town hall spat, not entirely in keeping with the Entente Cordiale.
Mayor Alec Hayton has revealed that repeated attempts to contact civic leaders in the French town had fallen on deaf ears – and now he was filing for the diplomatic equivalent of a divorce.
Sacre bleu!
So serious is Mr Hayton in his attempt to de-twin Wallingford, he has even lobbied the Council for European Municipalities and Regions. But officials told him it was impossible.
The town’s monthly Window for Wallingford magazine and annual Christmas card are promptly dispatched across the channel – but nothing ever comes back.
If Mr Hayton was to play the French at their own game, expect a blockade and, potentially, a ban on French imports in Wallingford.
