FARGO (Cert.18) 1996: Starring Frances McDormand. William H Macy, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare Monday, May 11 at 9.00pm Plot: Who can ever forget pregnant Police Chief Marge Gunderson? (McDormand) “Yah...yah...” she repeats as all the pieces in this fiendishly clever yarn - billed as ‘Based on a True Story’ - are uncovered by her patient and ‘Mom’s apple pie’ detective work.
McDormand deservedly won an Oscar for her role, as indeed William H Macy SHOULD have done for his role as the hapless car salesman who ineptly oversees the kidnapping of his own wife by two bumbling killers (Buscemi and Stormare).
Both touching, funny and utterly horrific in equal measure, Fargo is that perfect concoction of mirth and malice, with a heroine to genuinely cheer for.
Perfect.
