OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? (Cert.12) 2000: Starring George Clooney, John Turturro, Time Blake Nelson, Holly Hunter and John Goodman. Thursday, May 14 at 9.00pm. Plot: Under no circumstances should you be put off by the fact that this film is purported to be based on Homer’s Odyssey. Because whether it is or isn’t - it’s certainly one of the top feel-good films of all time, boasting a side-splitting performance from George Clooney as Ulysses Everett McGill, a convict during America’s Great Depression who goes on the run with Delmar O’Donnell (Nelson) and Pete (Turturro).
Together, the trio inadvertently become music stars as their rendition of ‘Man of Constant Sorrow’ - recorded to earn a few spare dimes - takes America by storm and their group, the Soggy Bottom Boys, become national heroes.
Along the way they encounter characters such as Baby Face Nelson, a machine-gunning cow killer, and a cyclopean Bible salesman named Big Dan Teague (Goodman).
And the film’s soundtrack - a collection of bluegrass masters - is without peer. So even if you don’t like the film, you can sit back, close your eyes and... just listen.
