outh Africa is very much on the way up. In the last ten years a handful of very top estates have emerged and driven quality upwards dramatically. Although the country produces good wines at many different price points these estates remain in a league of their own. The Best of South Africa mixed case costs £117 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
Vergelegen Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Stellenbosch: A huge and beautiful estate that was granted to the Governor of the Cape in 1700, Vergelegen has produced a stunning sauvignon which is a cross between the highly aromatic Kiwi style and the classic French examples from the Loire Valley — delicious.
Paul Cluver Chardonnay 2007, Elgin: Jancis Robinson stated recently on her website that South African Chardonnay is the next best thing to top class white Burgundy like Meursault — and she’s right. This wine has delicious creamy fruit and complex ripe buttery and nutty flavours.
Klein Constantia ‘KC’ Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2005, Stellenbosch/ Constantia: Made from a blend of 51 per cent Cabernet and 49 per cent Merlot, this juicy wine has subtle flavours of blackcurrant and ripe plum with delicious touches of spice thrown in for good measure — lovely wine.
Rustenberg John X Merriman 2006, Stellenbosch: A complex blend of five grape varieties, this fantastically rich wine can be enjoyed now or could be kept for another five years. It has wonderful structure, deep dense fruit and an impressively long aromatic finish — a wine for those special occasions.
