Sir – Reg Little (Report, April 16) quotes as follows from a report to the county council about the proposed flood relief channel to the west of Oxford: “The corridor also includes the Redbridge park-and-ride site and it will be important that the new channel route does not prejudice any plans for future expansion of the facility”.
Is this not the wrong way round?
I had not appreciated until visiting the recent presentation by the Environment Agency in Oxford Town Hall, how much of a bottleneck the Redbridge area presents to floodwaters leaving Oxford.
It is a cause for concern for residents of South Oxford, that the short-term measures being implemented are aimed at getting floodwaters from further north — that is the vicinity of the Botley Road — towards our part of town more quickly, but without providing any better means for getting them out of our way.
Even if the channel under discussion is never built, drainage channels in the Redbridge area surely need to be expanded.
To rephrase the passage just quoted, it will be important that any plans for expansion of the Redbridge park-and-ride site do not prejudice future flood prevention measures.
