Sir – We would like the opportunity to respond to comments made by Chris Gray in his column Gray Matter (March 26).

In his column, he refers to pub operator Wetherspoon and the manner in which it runs it pubs and concludes with the comment: ‘Please don’t let Wetherspoon spoil things for all of us . . .’ Mr Gray is obviously entitled to his views, but the hundreds of thousands of people who visit a Wetherspoon pub each week (including those in Oxford and Cowley), would probably disagree with him.

They enjoy going to a Wetherspoon pub for many reasons, including the quality and choice of food and drink, the award-winning toilets, the excellent standards and service, music-free environment and overall atmosphere.

And it is not just Wetherspoon customers who believe the company does things well.

It has won numerous awards relating to the quality of its real ale, its staff training, environmental approach and providing a safe environment for customers, to name just a few. Overall, we would argue that far from Wetherspoon spoiling things for the rest of us, it is offering people a great social asset.
