A conman stole a 89-year-old woman’s handbag while she made him a cup of tea in her home after he told her his car had broken down and he needed to phone for help.
Police are appealing for witnesses following the burglary in Staverton Road, North Oxford, at about 11am on Saturday.
He took her handbag, containing bank cards, travel cards and cash.
The burglar was described as white, in his 30s, of a strong build with short, fair hair and a reddish complexion.
Pc Tom Mansfield said: “We urge people to be vigilant when it comes to home security. Don’t let anyone into your home unless you know who they are.
“Always check for identification if they claim to be calling from an organisation – if in doubt, then call the organisation they claim to be from and check.”
Anyone with information should call police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
