I was one of the 200-plus members of the Women’s Land Army who were invited by the Lord Lieutenant of Oxford to a celebration service and tea party at Dorchester Abbey (Oxford Mail, April 1).

I have written to the Lord Lieutenant thanking him for such a wonderful afternoon, and would like to express, through your paper, my, and I am sure everyone else’s, appreciation, and to put on record what a perfect afternoon we were all given.

I was treated like royalty and was certainly a celebrity for the day.

Thank you to the volunteer helpers and stewards, who escorted us to our position in the abbey, the tea organisers (farmers and their wives), and the many firefighters – who could not do enough to make it all go so smoothly and with no hassle for any of us.

Everybody was eager to speak. I was even introduced to the Lord Lieutenant and had so many photos taken.

I have been wondering why. Was it because I was wearing my green jumper? Or my much-valued Land Army tie? Was it because I was on my mobile scooter? I’ll never know, but it was fantastic.

I am still on cloud nine!

It was worth waiting more than 60 years for, and I would like, through the Oxford Mail, to thank all who took part on that fabulous day. Thank you all.
