It was with sadness that I read your report on the demolition of the Duke of York pub (Oxford Mail, April 7).

I lived two doors away in New Street and can just remember it being built.

It has been a strange week as only last Friday I was looking at a very good exhibition of photographs of St Ebbe’s in the central library.

One was of the Holy Trinity Church being pulled down.

Both these buildings were in Trinity Street, one at each end.

On a Sunday morning, the church would ring its only bell until the service started. The landlord of the pub would open every door and window while he was getting ready to open and played a record of the Royal Marines march, Blaze Away, at full volume.

It was the best two alarms for me to get up and go to St Ebbe’s Church where I sang in the choir.
