In common with many other Oxford Mail readers, I feel cheated by the television companies.

A decade or so ago, the Beckley transmitter used to broadcast the London regional version of BBC1, which covered not only the capital but also the Home Counties and Oxfordshire, plus Central ITV, also covering Oxfordshire, parts of the South Midlands and the area from Milton Keynes to Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.

With an additional antenna pointing south, you also had the option of Meridian ITV and BBC South.

Then the BBC decided we were no longer in the South East but in the South This gave us the ‘benefit’ of news from such far-flung places as Hastings and Weymouth, but denied us news from more relevant places between Oxford and London.

The later inclusion of an Oxford news spot (with the delightful Geraldine Peers) was very welcome, though probably due to pressure from disgruntled viewers.

Then ITV decided we had no links with the Midlands and other areas covered by Central South, and more recently we have changed completely to Meridian, thus narrowing our viewing options still further.

Not only have we lost the charming Wesley, but we have also been deprived of those lovely weather girls Charlie Neil and Emma Jesson.

But hey, folks – cheer up! This is progress!
