So, the controversial and much-delayed city centre Capital Shopping (Westgate) development is at last under way, with the demolition of the previously popular Duke of York public house.
I suspect the only reason Capital Shopping have demolished this beautiful pub is so they can demonstrate they are doing something on the Westgate land.
Even though they don’t know when, or if, they will be able to go ahead with their huge car-based commercial proposal, they know that their planning permission for this will lapse this year if they cannot show they are active.
Once all the residents of Abbey Place have left, their housing will be demolished too.
The Oxford and Cherwell College building will be next, then the semi-mature trees that screen the ugly multi-storey car park will be cut down.
The last to go will be the ugliest – the multi-storey car park itself.
This would be welcomed except that it will only be demolished when another, bigger multi-storey car park is being constructed (should this ever actually go ahead).
It is a shame and a disgrace that the majority elect and support the proponents of this destruction in the outmoded name of commercial greed.
