A TEAM of Oxfordshire ice skaters is breaking into the big time, starring alongside Olympic skating legends Torvill and Dean on Saturday night.
The Oxford Freestylers will perform a hip hop and break dance number when the Dancing on Ice Tour opens for a four-night run at London’s Wembley Arena.
Hours of dedicated training paid off when the team saw off competition from thousands of hopefuls to be named the Hottest Ice Stars of Tomorrow, part of ITV’s popular Dancing on Ice series. The team are Lawrence Orsborn-Edwards, 18, from Blackbird Leys; Jordan Heeley, 14, from Preachers Lane, Oxford; Andy Hastings, 21, from Littlemore; Wayne Oliver, 22, from Headington; Rob Firkins, 18, from Abingdon; and Joey Tsang, 24, from Blackbird Leys.
Their two-minute routine, to the Black Eyed Peas song Dump It, requires daredevil confidence, split-second timing and perfect blade positioning on the ice.
The routine will feature an impressive five-man train jump by Rob, a double up and over sequence where members go through the legs and over the bodies of other members and a figure skating element — the aeroplane spin.
To prepare for the show the team have been training at Oxford Ice Rink, in Oxpens.
Andy Hastings, a tyre fitter at ATS Euromaster, in Cowley, said: “Earlier this week we met the show’s assistant coach Mark Naylor to put the finishing touches to the sequence.
“We have had to adapt the routine for Wembley, as it has a much bigger ice pad than the one used for the television series.
“We will be giving two performances each day and get 30 minutes’ rehearsal time on the ice for each show. We want to give a exciting performance as this is such a big occasion in front of thousands of people.”
The Dancing on Ice Tour is also a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the gold-medal winning Bolero routine at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.
The Freestylers will also be appearing alongside a host of celebrities and their professional skating partners, who took part in the TV show.
They include former rugby international Kyran Bracken, Todd Carty from EastEnders, and model and television presenter Melinda Messenger.
