Sir – Imagine our surprise a week or so ago when we heard the news that Thames Valley Probation Service is considering locating a centralised probation centre (serving Oxford city centre, Banbury and Abingdon) in Mill Street, Osney. We understand that this facility will be visited by up to 350 probationers per week (including sex offenders and those with convictions for violent crime).
Mill Street is a densely populated residential area, with only one narrow entrance for vehicular traffic. A significant proportion of the Mill Street population are children (over 50 at the last count...).
This type of facility belongs in a city centre; near a police station, near the courts, near other support services. It does not belong in this, or any other residential area.
