Argentina is on the way up. With the highest vineyards in the world the wines made here are aromatic and fruit filled with excellent concentration. Many make a superb partner to rich meat dishes and the malbec grape variety has found a new home here. Try this selection of new wave wines that show exactly just what this exciting wine producing country can produce in terms of sheer quality.
The Argentina's Finest case costs £97 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
Cristobal Verdelho 2008: The verdelho grape variety originates in Portugal and is particularly associated with the island of Madiera. In recent years it has become increasingly popular in Argentina and Cristobal have produced a floral and aromatic example that is brimming with fruit.
Pulenta Chardonnay 2006: Made from vines planted on their own estate, Pulenta’s chardonnay is an exceptionally well balanced wine that shows just how good this grape is when made with care and the oak handling is not overdone.
Tapiz Syrah 2006: This is a rich and powerful example of top-quality syrah with touches of pepper and spice, deep concentrated fruit and well structured tannins on the finish. Very much a food wine to go with rich meat dishes, especially beef.
Kaiken Cabernet Sauvignon 2006: Kaiken is owned by the famous wine making estate of Vina Montes in Chile who here, across the Andes in Argentina, have produced this superbly rich cabernet with ripe blackcurrant fruit and excellent structure — delicious wine.
