Two shops failed an underage alcohol test purchasing operation in the Abingdon area.

The operation saw under-age teenage volunteers, accompanied by undercover licensing officers, entering licensed premises and off licences and attempt to buy alcohol.

Two out of the four premises failed the operation last Friday which was carried out by police, including officers from the neighbourhood policing team and the licensing department.

A member of staff working in the Post Office in Drayton sold alcohol to the volunteers. He has been arrested and is now being dealt with by the Immigration Service for unrelated immigration offences.

A member of staff at the One Stop Shop in Wootton Road was also caught selling alcohol to the under-age volunteers and received an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice.

Thames Valley Police Licensing Officer, Tony Cope, said: “We are carrying out these operations throughout Oxfordshire to ensure that proper procedures are in place. We will then help these premises to ensure that all members of staff are trained correctly.

“If a licensed premises fails these operations three times, we then consider reviewing their licence and it can be revoked.”
