A £33M scheme to build the Oxford Academy on the old Peers School site has been approved by Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet and building work will begin next month.

And the Oxford Mail can today offer an early glimpse of what the academy will look like when the scheme is completed in the summer of 2011.

The rebuilt academy will provide facilities for up to 1,050 secondary school students and up to 400 sixth form pupils.

It will also include a 150-place specialist sports academy.

The project will also see Mabel Pritchard Special School rebuilt and the creation of a new library, which will be used by academy students as well as serving as a learning centre for the community.

The Oxford Academy, which specialises in Maths, ICT and Sport, opened its doors in September last year following the closure of Peers School.

A total of £29m in Government money will finance the new Academy, with £4m from the county council.

Oxford Academy principal Mike Reading said: “These exceptional facilities really will underpin the work we are already doing to ensure the Academy delivers an outstanding, vibrant and exciting educational environment.”
