Sir – The Bodleian Library’s authorities are said to have snubbed Oxford by choosing to build its much-needed storage centre in Swindon (Report, March 19), but who can blame them?

Repeated attempts to find a site within the city or in the county as a whole have been consistently blocked by planners and ‘environmentalists’, who argue the projected sites are unsuitable for various reasons.

The result is that the Bodleian has been forced to look further afield, with far worse implications for the environment, and local employment. Methinks a sizeable own goal has been scored.
