A man has been praised by firefighters for helping to prevent a blaze from spreading at his home in Didcot during the early hours yesterday.
Shortly before midnight, the man dialled 999 after discovering the fire in the kitchen at his house in Wheatfields.
After calling the fire service, the man then closed the kitchen door and stopped the flames from reaching the rest of the property.
Fire crews gave him oxygen to help with the effects of breathing in smoke before paramedics arrived to give further first aid.
Incident commander Steve Wright said: "The actions of the occupant most certainly prevented the fire from spreading and he did exactly what we tell all people to do on discovering a fire.
"Get out of the property, stay out and call 999. This will allow trained firefighters in appropriate protective clothing to extinguish the fire more safely."
