Oxford’s landmarks are to be plunged into darkness when their floodlights are switched off in a global campaign to raise awareness of climate change.
Earth Hour 2009, on Saturday, March 28, will see 900 cities across the world turn off non-essential lights and appliances for 60 minutes.
In Oxfordshire, the city and county councils have promised to take part in the switch off between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.
The Midcounties Co-operative, Oxford Brookes University and Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust will also join in the blackout.
City councillor John Tanner, board member for a cleaner, greener Oxford, said: “Oxford City Council is supporting WWF's Earth Hour because everyone in Oxford needs to reduce their carbon footprint. Switching off those unnecessary lights and electrical appliances really does make a difference.
“I would encourage you all to switch off your lights and appliances for one hour to show your support to Earth Hour.”
