CITY residents are being asked to help plant more than 350 new trees in a West Oxford park.

The Forest of Oxford was set up to establish small pockets of woodland to brighten up empty spaces across the city.

The next target is to plant trees on the Botley Road Recreation Ground.

The planting, funded by the Midcounties Co-op, will see 150 golden willows and 150 scarlet willows planted, along with a handful of poplars, alders and willows dotted around the park.

Children from West Oxford Primary School got involved with the first phase of planting today.

However, volunteers can help do the bulk of the work this weekend.

Forest of Oxford co-ordinator John Thompson said: “I think it’s very important to get the local community involved with their open spaces.

“Trees make Oxford’s green spaces much more interesting to visit because they encourage birds and wildlife, and you get to see the trees change colour with the seasons. The trees will help absorb some of the CO2 in the area too.”

Anyone interested should turn up at the park between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday.
