AS you say in your editorial (Oxford Mail, March 4) it is indeed good news for Oxfordshire that new versions of the BMW Mini were unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

I hope they result in many extra orders.

However, it is not the case that all the new models mentioned will go on sale in the UK shortly.

I was very disappointed to read that the basic level Mini will only be sold abroad. I’m sure that there are many British motorists who would appreciate the road-holding and performance of the Mini, but who find it too expensive.

This is not the first time this has happened. Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s Citroën withdrew the fantastic 2CV from the British market, and Renault never sold the delightful original Twingo here.

Manufacturers think that British motorists are mainly interested in gadgets and status. I fear they are right. But a few of us appreciate practicality and cheapness.
