I WRITE regarding your correspondent’s query as to the naming of Headington’s Lakes estate (Oxford Mail, March 5).

We were the second family to move into the new houses, built by AC Carter, in Bowness Avenue in 1934.

I started work in Eden Drive Post Office and saw the whole estate grow – knowing every person who came to live in the new houses, as they came into the shop to order their daily newspapers.

The whole estate was known as the Great Headley Estate.

Yes, the roads on the estate have been named after the Lake District –by whom or why I do not know – but my father bought our home not on ‘The Lakes’ but the ‘GHE’.
