A DRIVER was treated by paramedics today after his lorry overturned in North Oxford, spilling its load of tyres on to the carriageway.

The accident happened on the A44, between the Pear Tree interchange on the A34 and the Wolvercote roundabout.

One lane was closed and drivers on the southbound carriageway were delayed as recovery vehicles removed the lorry from the road, following the accident at 10.30am.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance said: “Paramedics treated the driver at the scene but he did not need hospital treatment.”

The lorry was full of tyres which were apparently on their way to the BMW Mini plant in Cowley.

Photographer Mark Bassett said: “When the lorry tipped over, metal cages full of tyres came out and highways staff moved them on to the grass verge near the entrance to Pear Tree park-and-ride.

“It was a big lorry and there must have been at least 100 tyres contained in these cages.”

A police spokesman said: “One lane was closed as a result.

“Our officers helped Highways Agency staff to deal with the incident. No-one was seriously hurt.”
