The twelfth Abingdon Arts Festival will begin with a mass painting event.

The annual event, organised by Abingdon Performing Arts Group Enterprise, will run from Thursday until Saturday, April 4.

The arty entertainment will begin with Bigging up Vermeer on March 21.

In six hours, 25 artists will aim to paint a square of Vermeer’s The Art of Painting at the Abingdon Guildhall, in Abbey Close.

At 4pm, the canvasses will be collected together to create a 10ft sq version of the original, which will be displayed in the town throughout the festival.

In the evening, celebrity Phil Hammond, of BBC’s Trust Me I’m a Doctor, will talk about the NHS.

Malcolm Ross, festival chairman, said: “This is the 12th festival we have had, and will be the best yet.

“There will be a range of workshops, theatre, music, drama, exhibitions and amateur and professional arts.

“The event is set up so that people can try something new. And tickets are selling quickly.

“The committee works hard to put it together so we want as many people as possible to experience the arts. We get so much out of it, we want others to too.”
