Members of Oxford Motor Club are celebrating after receiving a special award to recognise its long history.

The club, which runs rallies and other events, was founded in 1907.

Last year the group, which has more than 100 members ranging in age from 11 to 80, was informed by the Motor Sports Association that it was to be awarded the MSA’s Centenary Cup.

And on Saturday members of the group proudly showed it off.

Club chairman Kevin Belcher, 42, from Marcham, said: “It’s a great honour – there are only about 12 other clubs that have been going as long as us.

“For a motor club to be going as long as we have is quite an achievement.”

He said he also hoped the award would help attract new blood to the group, adding: “We’re always keen to get fresh faces down to help us continue for another 100 years.”

There are more than 750 motor clubs in the country, running more than 5,000 events each year, but Oxford Motor Club is only the 18th to receive the Club Centenary Award.

Founded to provide a meeting place for people with an interest in motoring, the club evolved to provide a forum for motor sport, particularly rallying, in the city, and a range of social activities for its members. Mr Belcher said the club organised between 20 and 25 events year.

They include road rallies for up to 12 pairs of members, testing navigational skills; endurance rallies, usually run on farmland; and stage rallies, one of the most popular forms of motor sport.

The club meets on the first Wednesday of every month at Cumnor Cricket Club, in Appleton Road.
