A DOG owner from Woodstock is celebrating after her German long-haired pointer was named best-of-breed at Crufts.

Five-year-old Base beat competition from hundreds of other dogs to take home the rosette at the Kennel Club’s annual competition.

His owner, Brenda Moss, 57, pictured with him, said: “A lot of hard work and patience has gone into this but winning is always a fabulous feeling. I started off with just a pet dog and soon realised they had other abilities.”

Mrs Moss, an operations manager, has been competing at Crufts for 20 years.

She said: “It just has this unique atmosphere and you get to meet up with people you might not have seen in years.”

Base was the second Oxfordshire dog to take home a best of breed prize in this year’s contest, following in the pawprints of five-year-old Dizzy, owned by Gavin Robertson from Abingdon, who was named best Petit Basset Griffon Veedeen.

The perfectly groomed pair were among 25,000 dogs taking part in the four day competition at Birmingham NEC. Nearly 150,000 people visited the show.
