The new £109m cancer centre at Oxford’s Churchill Hospital is set to open for its first patients next week.

Last month, building contractors gave health managers the keys to the new centre in Headington, and Prime Minister Gordon Brown was shown the hospital’s state-of-the-art equipment on a visit.

The building brings all cancer services together under one roof and includes 217 beds and 10 new operating theatres.

Earlier this month, members of the public were given the opportunity to see the new facilities, which include the cancer and haematology centre, surgery and diagnostics, and the Wytham Wing for private patients.

The hospital is also equipped with six £1m linear accelerators, which scan patients for tumours.

Up to 100,000 patients will be treated at the centre each year and 800 staff will work there.
