SCHOOLCHILDREN stepped back in time to the Swinging Sixties when they tucked into shortbread and pink custard to mark a milestone anniversary.

Pupils at Fir Tree School in Wallingford marked 40 years of lessons on Tuesday and invited back old faces, including the first headteacher Cyril Hovard, to help them celebrate.

Pupils dressed up in 1969 clothes, had 1969-style lessons and enjoyed a 1969 school lunch.Headteacher Lee Ryman said: “The children have loved finding out about life at Fir Tree in 1969. Visits from ex-pupils, staff and the original headteacher Mr Hovard, who opened the school in 1969, as well as the chance to look at original school magazines and photos, have given them a really good understanding of how education has changed.

“I’m delighted that some of the strengths of the school from the 1960s continue to be a success today.”

The school was opened in March 1969 by television star Johnny Morris, who presented Animal Magic.

Former pupils photographed with the presenter at the opening returned to recreate the picture — but with Mr Hovard posing as Mr Morris.
