Sir – The Humanist fervour prevalent in your letters page provides a fascinating insight on two fronts.
Firstly, it is met by a deathly silence from the church, a sure indication that its own lack of faith and self-indulgent greed throughout history, is the very reason why more people keep well clear of its ritualistic side, in preference to the quiet contemplation available in an empty church.
It is this which leads us to the second point; why would a Humanist crave any form of ceremony which would indicate a link to that which it so vehemently opposes?
As the saying goes: ‘God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform…’ (William Cowper 1731-1800).
