Dozens of people were evacuated from Plowman Tower in Headington this morning following a flat fire inside the building.

Fire crews were called at around 3.30am after fire broke out in a flat on the third floor. The blaze was put out before it could spread.

The majority of the building was evacuated as a safety precaution and between 60 and 70 people were taken to Northway Community Centre in Dora Carr Close.

All the residents have since returned to their flats.

A man has been taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital to receive treatment for smoke inhalation.

Insp Andy Storey said: “Luckily no one was seriously injured.

“We are in the early stages of our investigation and are working with the fire service to find out how the fire started although we don’t believe it was started deliberately.”
