WITH the latest drop in temperatures – a further phase of the coldest winter for 20 years – my thoughts turn to those who find it hardest to cope with the bitter weather: the elderly, disabled people, the long-term sick and families on a low income.

Late last year I was asked to help with the winter campaign for the Home Heat Helpline (on 0800 33 66 99) which gives free practical help for those struggling with their energy bills.

By calling the helpline, your readers can access a range of free practical measures including free home insulation and even lower tariffs for those on certain benefits.

But I am aware that those who are most in need often find it hardest to access such a service.

By making sure the homes of our vulnerable friends and neighbours get insulated for free, we can make a long-term difference to their health and their wealth and help the planet a little too.
