AN OXFORDSHIRE helicopter pilot has been awarded one of the military’s top bravery medals.
It was announced today that Flight Lieutenant Kevin Harris, based at RAF Benson, had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross after leading a helicopter team in saving 30 seriously wounded personnel in Iraq.
He flew his Merlin helicopter in to save three wounded soldiers at Basra Palace in March last year despite poor weather conditions and heavy fighting.
The pilot, now 28, dodged power lines and hostile areas to fly the patients to hospital.
Flt Lt Harris was out of the country today and unavailable to comment, but was said to be elated and honoured when he heard the news.
His commanding officer, Wing Commander Simon Paterson, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Flt Lt Harris’ bravery has been recognised by this phenomenal award.
“Kevin demonstrated his true mettle as an outstanding officer showing skill, gallantry and leadership in abundance, and we are very proud.”
Flt Lt Harris, who is originally from Southampton, joined the RAF seven years ago.
Last year Flt Lt Michelle Goodman from RAF Benson was also awarded the DFC.
