Food writer and former actress Madhur Jaffrey shared her memories of growing up in India at a public lecture at Oxford Brookes University.

About 130 students, staff and members of the public were at the university’s main lecture theatre on Tuesday to hear the ‘Queen of Curry’ read extracts from her memoir, Climbing the Mango Tree.

Ms Jaffrey, the author of best-selling recipe books including The Curry Bible and A Taste of India, met students at the university at a reception after taking to the lectern as the guest speaker at the Martin Radcliffe Fellowship Lecture.

The event was held in connection with the university’s Oxford Gastronomica, the UK’s first dedicated centre for the study of food, drink and culture, of which Ms Jaffrey is a founding patron.

Donald Sloan, head of hospitality, leisure and tourism management, said: “Madhur Jaffrey has helped change our perceptions of Indian cooking.”
