Sir – I object to Michael Tyce’s assumptions and excuse for a bit of teacher bashing in his letter about school closures (Letters, February 26).

The snide comment ‘what now passes for education’ shows a nasty, cynical agenda.

Mr Tyce needs to check out his facts before he reaches for his pen. School authorities and headteachers made an executive decision to close the schools, not the teachers.

Many teachers, like me, did ‘struggle to school’ and I can assure Mr Tyce that nearly all children were forewarned of the closure by website or by telephoning in.

There are arguments for keeping schools open, agreed, but there are also issues about children’s safety and well being.

For example, the running of public transport, and the well being of children who live in remote locations or rural areas, will have all been factors in a decision made not by teachers, but by the authorities that run our schools.
