NOT only is Mr Lynas’s view on nuclear power not Green Party policy in Oxford (Nuclear Fallout for the Greens, in Tuesday’s Oxford Mail), but his views on nuclear power are not national Green Party policy either.
It is a measure of how desperate people are to curb the urgent threat of runaway climate change, that some Greens are even considering such extreme solutions.
Mark Lynas is speaking for himself, and not as a representative of Green Party policy, when he talks of a new generation of nuclear power stations as an answer to energy needs.
Green Party policy is to urgently institute a programme to insulate all buildings (nearly a quarter of our carbon emissions are from buildings), and invest in renewable energies which would create green-collar jobs.
These moves could go a long way to providing for our energy needs without highly toxic nuclear waste, which is impossible to store safely for hundreds of years.
