Firefighters and police were called after a fire at the front door of a house in High Cross Way, Barton, at about 12.15am.
Fifteen minutes later police were alerted after petrol was poured through the letterbox of a house in Bernwood Road on the estate, although the fuel was not set alight.
No-one was injured, but police believe the attacks were linked.
Detectives remain at the scene of both arson attacks.
