A man who flashed at a female delivery worker taking a parcel to his house, was yesterday told he could be spared jail.

John Devine, of Coxwell Road, Faringdon, beckoned to the woman through his window on November 11, telling her to go to a side door where he would sign for the package she was delivering.

Mohamed Sheikh, prosecuting at Oxford Magistrates’ Court, said: “She pushed it open and she saw him sitting in his wheelchair wearing a vest, with his trousers around his ankles.

“She was shocked and gave the parcel to him, without the signature. She ran out into the street and burst into tears.”

Devine, 56, was convicted of one charge of indecent exposure after an earlier trial, which he did not attend. He also admitted one charge of failing to surrender to the court.

Simon Graham-Harrison, defending, said Devine had health problems and issues with alcohol abuse.

He said: “Although the behaviour that constitutes the offence is clearly lewd and disgusting, it could be dealt with by way of a community order.”

District Judge Shlomo Kreiman adjourned sentencing to Tuesday, March 17, for a report to be prepared, and gave Devine bail. He said: “I am prepared to rule out a custodial sentence.”
