A reminder that the wonderful vocalist Juliet Kelly is at the Spin Jazz Club tonight. Tomorrow, there’s the first of two opportunities to hear the excellent saxophonist Dave O’Higgins when he appears with the Nicolas Meier quartet at the Carswell Golf and Country Club. Swiss guitarist Meier is one of the most assured and imaginative players, who also performs on the Arabic oud. Contact Richard Speed on 01367 710593.
O’Higgins also comes to the Spin Jazz Club in the Wheatsheaf, off Oxford’s High Street, next Thursday, when he will be appearing with trumpeter Quentin Collins and the house band for an evening’s tribute to Miles Davis’s seminal album A Kind of Blue. The evening will feature the music of the album alongside more recent material in celebration of this great recording by two of the country’s finest horn players.
The wonderful guitarist Deidre Cartwright (pictured) with bass player Alison Rayner comes to the East Oxford Community Centre on Tuesday. Cartwright is a player with a tremendous sense of swing and phrasing. A very special event at a local venue. Music from 8pm, tickets at the door.
Oxford-based vocalist Alison Bentley is at Veritas Wine bar in Banbury with her own trio on Sunday. Alison is a singer with a superb sense of groove who can polish up the shine on any melody she sings. On the same day, Alvin Roy and trio are at the Lock Stock and Barrel in Newbury.
Good music continues at the Jazz Cellar in the Big Bang on Walton Street on Tuesday with piano and vocals from Joe Jackson with Nick Black on saxophone. Joe is appearing here for the first time having recently moved to Oxford from London. A new talent to the city.
Elsewhere, the Howard Peacock Quintet are at the Backroom at the Bully on Tuesday, the Roger Marks Armade Jazz Band are at the Beaconsfield Jazz Club on Wednesday and Bejazzled are at the White Hart in Eynsham on Thursday.
