More than half of Oxford’s play areas will be refurbished after the city council rubberstamped £2.5m of investment for the work.

The scheme, which was a key manifesto pledge of the council’s Labour administration, will see 51 of the authority’s run-down play areas revamped during a two year programme of work.

Four new play areas will also be created at Spencer Crescent in Rose Hill, Northway Park in Headington, Milham Ford Park in Marston and Rutherway in North Oxford.

Work on the giant programme of investment will begin next week with diggers set to roll into the play area on the Botley Road Recreation Ground, on Monday, weather permitting.

The £65,000 renovation will be the first under the new scheme and will involve moving the under-used play facilities at Helen Road to a new location next to the West Oxford Community Centre in Botley Road.

Antonia Bance, board member for social inclusion and young people, said: “The refurbishment of play areas in the city is great news for young people and families, and it fulfils a manifesto pledge of this administration. We are committed to the development and improvement of play areas in the city.”
