THERE are many differing views about the ‘improvement’ to Bonn Square.
Rather than waste time joining the ‘for it or against it’ argument, I have been looking at the overall design – and admit to being disappointed, though not surprised.
If I were designing a new lighting system on my own property, I’d ensure that it would be easy and cheap to maintain.
This includes changing light bulbs. How would you replace any of that batch of three perched on the top of those long posts? I assume a vehicle with lifting gear would be required.
And what happens to the sloping area when it ices over? It will become an insurance claim bonanza.
Did Health and Safety miss an opportunity here? Never mind, I’m sure they’ll catch up eventually – demanding closure and expensive reworking.
And what of those benches? Surely the designer knew that these were to be situated outside, so it wouldn’t have taken much thought to design surrounding tiles that don’t stain.
It’s another of those ideas that might have looked good on paper – as a small child’s drawing perhaps – but bares no closer scrutiny.
