Stroke survivors and people with dementia are being treated to two free concerts in a top Oxford venue tomorrow. The events at the Jacqueline du Pre Music Building in Cowley Place form part of the Moving Music series, which provides free classical music concerts featuring the Orchestra of St John for carers and those they look after.

Orchestra founder John Lubbock said the concerts were wonderful for victims of dementia.

He said: “They come in not terribly on the ball then, during the course of the music we play, we intersperse it with songs of their period, like Vera Lynn, and what is extraordinary is they will know six verses of the stuff.

“It seems to bring a light on in the back of their head and the carers are completely overwhelmed because they are sitting next to someone they used to know.”

The Moving Music concerts are in their second year and were originally funded by Arts Council England.

The concerts are at noon and 2pm – call 01865 205192 or 276821 for tickets.
