A TRIO of former Woolworths bosses who want to open their own shops to replace the former High Street stores have their eye on Witney as the first of many.

Former commercial director Tony Page and colleagues Andy Latham and Steve Jebson plan to open 50 shops selling “pocket money” treats and everyday items.

Mr Page, who has secured funding in the region of £10m, said the group wanted to exploit the gap Woolworths had left behind — and was looking to open locally in Witney and Thame.

The 42-year-old added: “Witney could be the launch town — if the opportunity arises. We are looking for sites around the South East and Witney and Thame are two we are keen on. The idea is to sell a range of goods including toys, confectionary and household products.”

Last week a petition was lodged after the owners of the Witney Woolworths site, The Manny Davidson Trust, submitted a planning application to West Oxfordshire District Council for change of use to a restaurant.

Jan Bowes, of Cafe Bakehouse, who started the petition, said traders were against the change of use at the High Street site.

So far the petition has attracted 300 signatures.

The 52-year-old said traders in the town felt Witney would benefit more from a big retailer and did not need more bars, restaurants, cafes or pubs.

Manny Davidson Trust agent Huw Thomas confirmed Mr Page had been in contact. He said: “I have passed on Mr Page to a letting agent who is fielding all inquiries.”
