THE folk rock legends behind an annual Oxfordshire music festival have been picked to headline a cancer charity concert at London’s Albert Hall next month.
Fairport Convention, who set up the three day Cropredy Folk Festival in a field near Banbury 30 years ago, have been picked to head up the first ever folk gig at the week long Teenage Cancer Trust festival, TCT, on March 25.
The band are already supporters of TCT, and have in the past raised almost £30,000 for the charity, which offers help and support to teenage cancer victims and their families.
The bands founding member, Simon Nicol, said: “When we were asked to play for Teenage Cancer Trust, we couldn’t say no.
“These shows have become a major date in the music calendar and it’s wonderful that we can help the fundraising effort.
“The Albert Hall is a great venue for listening to music and it’s also a wondeful venue to perform in.”
Fairport Convention will star alongside fellow music stars Seth Lakeman and Kate Rusby with more names from the folk world to be announced closer to the date.
The band have taken part in many fundraising events for TCT over the past few years, and raised the £30,000 through the Cropredy Festival which attracts around 20,000 visitors a year.
The six days worth of concerts will kick off on Tuesday March 24, with performances from Antony and the Johnsons <<corr>>and Florence and the Machine.
Fairport will headline on Wednesday March 25, followed by the Stereophonics on Thursday, Kasabian on Friday and Bullet for My Valentine on Saturday.
