Following Wednesday’s Oxford Mail editorial titled Action, not just words, I would like to put the record straight. Oxfordshire County Council and its partners have acted swiftly to assist those who have lost their jobs at BMW in Cowley by providing on-site advice at the plant and setting up a Job Club each Thursday from next week, to be held at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre.
Opening hours are 11.30am to 2.30pm and anybody wishing to receive advice about applying for jobs and the benefits to which they are entitled is welcome.
This instant response is down to careful planning with our partners over the recent months. It is this risk assessment and pre-planning as the country went into recession that has enabled us to respond so quickly after we learned of the job losses early on Monday morning.
We will continue to do all we can to help the residents of Oxfordshire during these uncertain economic times.
KEITH MITCHELL, Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, County Hall, Oxford
