Police in Banbury were able to trace a suspected dangerous driver thanks to the assistance of the police helicopter.
During yesterday afternoon a green Peugeot had reportedly been involved in a collision in Bloxham, but had failed to stop.
Details of the car were circulated to officers in the area and at about 4.20pm it was seen being driven erratically in Gatteridge Street, Banbury.
Officers initially tried to follow it, but because it was being driven so dangerously it was decided to hold back and use the helicopter to track it.
The helicopter arrived on the scene at about 4.45pm and located the vehicle in Oxford Road, Banbury. They were able to track it as it went into Upper Windsor Street, then into Swan Close and finally into Morrisons car park. They were then able to guide officers on the ground to where the driver was and he was arrested.
An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop following a road traffic collision. He has been released on bail until Tuesday, March 3.
Sgt Kev Robinson, of the Chiltern Air Support Unit, said: “This was a great example of how we are able to assist officers on the ground. In this incident we were able to track the vehicle safely, without putting members of the public and officers at risk, and then guide them to where the suspected offender was. This was a good bit of work by everyone involved.”
Anyone who witnessed this car in the area is asked to contact police via 0845 8 505 505. If you don’t want to speak to police or give your name, please call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
