A 20-year-old man who was described by police as an antisocial and violent drunk has pledged to turn his life around after appearing in cour for breaching an Antisocial Behaviour Order.

Alistair Aitken, of Preston Road, Abingdon, was given the Asbo last December – the day he was freed from prison.

His Asbo bans him from Saxton Road, Gainsborough Green and Reynolds Way at all times and the town centre from 7pm-6am.

He must not drink alcohol or be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs in public and is not allowed to be in a group of three or more people.

But just weeks later, Aitken was caught drunk outside the Midget pub, off Preston Road.

On Wednesday, Didcot magistrates ordered that Aitken be fitted with an electronic tag and ordered him to stay at home from 7pm-7am every day for four months. The other restrictions on the Asbo still apply.

The punishment also took into account criminal damage to a police van and assaulting a police officer, which he also admitted.

Aitken, who wants to become a gym instructor, apologised for the trouble he had caused.

He said: “I just want to stay out of trouble. I don’t want all this madness anymore. Going to jail isn’t going to sort me out, so I’m pleased with the sentence.

“I want to turn my life around. I have been trying. I was doing well until this, but that day was a mistake. I was in a bit of a mess.”

Aitken said: “I want to be able to hold a job down and do normal things. I want to say sorry to the police for my behaviour. It won’t happen again, I promise.”

His father, David Aitken, 39, said Aitken was worried about his grandmother at the time of the incident, who was in a coma after suffering a heart attack. She is now out of hospital.

He said: “I’m really proud of him, because he was doing so well and helped out when his grandmother was in hospital.

“All he’s interested in now is having a quiet life and spending time with his girlfriend.”

He said he wanted his son to carry on seeking help for mental health and alcohol problems.

The court heard that on the day Aitken was arrested for breaching his Asbo, he headbutted a partition in a police van so hard that he cut his head and caused £235 of damage.

Sentencing Aitken, magistrate Ros Young warned him it was his last chance. She said: “You could have gone back into prison.”

He was also fined £70 and ordered to pay £125 costs.
