The rafters will be rocking in the pretty village of Wytham on Saturday from 7.30pm when highly acclaimed harpist Máire Ní Chathasaigh, Irish Traditional Musician of the Year 2001, will be performing with the versatile English guitar wizard Chris Newman.
They will be mixing an addictive and stylish cocktail of powerhouse Irish dance-music, gorgeous airs, evocative old songs and striking new compositions – with shots of hot jazz and bluegrass thrown in for good measure. Featuring their blazing guitar and dancing harp numbers interspersed with Chris’s subversively witty introductions, it promises to be a unique and captivating evening.
Máire grew up in a well-known West Cork musical family and has been playing the harp since the age of 11. Interweaving this with her knowledge of oral Irish tradition, she developed her own authentically traditional style of harping. Chris Newman is one of Britain’s leading guitarists and a prolific composer and arranger but his overriding passion is for the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland.
The show is taking place in the appropriately rustic surroundings of the village hall in Wytham and is suitable for people of all ages and tastes. As this is in part a fundraising village event, a real community spirit and friendly family atmosphere is guaranteed. There is free parking and a licensed bar.
The tickets cost £8 (£5 for concessions) and are available on the door, or in advance from the Wytham Village Shop.
