it may well be that, when they suggested delegating to the waste disposal industry the decision as to whether Oxfordshire’s waste should be incinerated, the Liberal Democrats fondly imagined they were protecting the county against an unholy alliance in favour of an incinerator.
However, if Jean Fooks (Oxford Mail, February 12) seriously believes Labour would have supported such an alliance, she is sadly mistaken.
If the Liberal Democrats had troubled themselves to explore the views of Labour councillors, they would have found only one committed supporter of incineration.
My own opposition to incineration has been on public record since 2004.
Most other Labour councillors were either, like myself, opposed or else had no strong views on the issue.
If the Liberal Democrats had had the courage to oppose incineration openly, it could well have been possible to defeat the proposal.
By opting instead to fudge the issue, it seems the Liberal Democrats may have been too clever for their own good.
