More workers have reacted angrily at the way they have been treated by BMW as the car giant announced its had axed 850 jobs at the Cowley plant this morning. Father-of-one Bart Hryniow, 25, of Headington, said: “The union has been speaking to them for three weeks and we all get told an hour before we leave.
“People were upset and throwing eggs and apples at the union. Everyone was very angry.”
Watch video from inside the meeting:
Father-of-one Bart Sakorski, 26, said: “I had an egg in my hand but I didn’t throw it. Others did.
“It’s my birthday day, what a day. What the union did to us, well, they are the biggest s**** there.”
Mat Nowak, 27, said: “I have a loan and now I can’t make the repayments. I don’t know what to do.
“It was very angry and tense in there. Some hid the ignition keys. Others smashed dashboards and one or two scratched the bonnets.”
A 43-year-old worker said: “All week we’ve been asking questions about our jobs.
“I’ve been here nearly five years and they can get rid of me like this, just an hour before the end of my shift.”
Another worker said: “It’s disgusting. It was just a case of see you later now go get another job.”
One worker said: “They said go to the meeting and you won’t be coming back. We all knew what was coming.”
All C shift agency workers – the weekend shift – have been axed.
They were handed a letter ordering them to back their uniform and ID card or be charged £35.
The letter said staff have a weeks notice and will end employment on February 23.
But all weekend shift staff were on fixed holiday until that date.
The letter added: “The automotive industry continues to face challenging conditions and while Mini is a string brand it is not immune from the current global economic climate.
“To match the current market situation, Plant Oxford has taken the decision to take off the weekend shift.”
With the weekend shift axed all remaining full-time staff will now work week shifts instead.
